Q Latin America largely fell off the US radar after 9/11. What are the most important issues in the region today? What is the US role in those policy areas?
Latin America largely fell off the US radar after 9/11. The most important issue in this region today are immigration, human trafficking, and drug and weapon smuggling. The influx of immigrant from outside the nation make a great burden upon the nation and also create the threat of terrorism (Youngers, 2003). It is difficult to identify the motive of any person entering the nation as an immigrant, so it increases the chance of terrorism. For this reason, Latin America come under the radar of the United States after the 9/11 attacks. Human trafficking is also a big threat for any nation and Latin America highly suffered from such threat. This is also a reason the United States surveillance nations of Latin America (Youngers, 2003).
